transforming production and consumption into the ultimate cup of coffee.
Indian coffee is known to be the finest coffee in the world for its taste and flavour. 70% of the Indian coffee is produced in three districts (Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Hassan) of Karnataka and the rest in adjoining two states (Kerala and Tamilnadu). The unique flavour of Indian coffee attributes to it being grown in the shade rather than direct sunlight like anywhere else in the world.
In India during 1600 A.D., a Muslim Pilgrim Baba Budan brought seven coffee seeds from Yemen and raised in the “Chandragiri” hills of present Chikmagalur district in Karnataka. The commercial cultivation of coffee started by Britishers in the “Coorg” district of Karnataka, during 1820.
The two well-known species of coffee grown in India are Arabica and Robusta. Indian coffee accounts for only 5% of the global production. However, it is in great demand for its unique taste and flavour. Almost 80% of Indian coffee is exported; mostly to Germany, Russia, Spain, Belgium, Slovenia, United States, Japan, Greece, Netherlands, Italy and France.
